Erectile dysfunction in the simple term means inability to attain or sustain an erection. Erection commonly occurs when there is an increased blood flow to the penis and decreased venous flow from the penis. For an increased blood flow the arteries supplying the penis should relax so that blood fills the arteries. The researchers found out that aerobic exercise is beneficial in reverting arterial erectile dysfunction in male population and they have listed out the possible mechanism by which arterial erectile dysfunction can be cured by aerobic exercise.

Positive Effects of Aerobic Exercise on Erectile dysfunction

  • Exercise results in changes in biochemical neural and hormonal status that brings a long term vasodilatation or relaxation of blood vessels. A relaxed blood vessel can accommodate more blood in the penis and facilitate better gaseous exchange.
  • Regular exercise reduces the inflammatory markers in the human body there by reducing the chances of penile inflammation.
  • Aerobic exercise increases the endothelial function of the blood vessel of penis. The endothelial walls secrete nitric oxide which is a potent blood vessel dilator. Error less Learning technique- A Novel Method For People Having Dementia

Dementia or memory loss is a common characteristic of the majority domain of central neural degenerative disease. Many factors contribute to the development of dementias ,among them Alzheimer’s disease is the main reason for progressive cognitive decline. Loss of memory alone cannot be considered as dementia. Medically at least two brain functions should be affected for a person to be categorized under dementia. Most notable is loss of memory and impaired judgement in activities of  day to day life. Dementia is never the end of the road,most of the dementias are curable and some are even reversible.

The risk factors for dementia can be categorized into modifiable and non modifiable risk factors. Risk factors that cannot be altered includes age, family history.down’s  syndrome. Modifiable risk factors, means with diligent care the risk can be reduced to zero includes alcohol consumption, blood pressure, cholesterol, atherosclerosis,high estrogen level, obesity, smoking etc.

Cognitive decline or memory loss has found limited success with medical therapy supportive and caregiver strategies works out most of the times. Breaking up of complex tasks into smaller components,the use of things to do diary all have been tried.

 Maartje MEde Werd, a researcher from Netherland and his coworkers tried to investigate the effect of error less learning in dementia patients. They investigated 26 studies conducted till date on dementia patients mostly those who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease using error less techniques.

The commonly used error less techniques quoted in the literature were broadly based on five categories.

1.No Guessing Technique– In this technique the participants were encouraged not to guess. The participants were given either a choice of right or wrong. The decision has to be made without any pause and the sequence is completed once the participants are able to make a correct response.

2.Stepwise Approach Modelling Technique- The therapist first demonstrates each step of a process and invites the patient to complete the process. Finally the patient is made to do the whole tasks without any prompting.

3.Verbal Instruction Visual Instruction Technique- The technique basically allows the individual to do the activity of his own. The therapist monitors the entire process and in case of an error either visual clue or a verbal instruction are given until the participant completes the task.

4.Vanishing Cues Technique- Here the participant performs a task and during the steps each cue is gradually removed and the person is encouraged to complete the task without the help of the cues .

5.Spaced Retrieval Technique-In the technique participant is asked to recall information with increased time intervals. If the patient hesitates therapist gives a hint. If the patient is unable to remember the interval is reduced and when the patient master the data, the recall intervals are further lengthened.

 

The study after analyzing the treatment strategies concluded that error less learning techniques when compared to no treatment helps in improved recall and cognitive abilities in individuals with mild to moderate dementia.

Disease fighting feature of apple is mainly due to the presence of a variety of phytochemicals  which are potent antioxidants. Having at least a serving of apple every day helps in reducing cancer. Compared to other fruits women who consumed apple were found to have reduced risk of lung cancer .The flavonoids present apple was responsible for this protective effect. Catechin present in apple in much superior to tea. It reduces the occurrence of epithelial cancer. Apple consumption reduces the risk for tumors of the stomach and alimentary canal.

A research conducted at Ohio State University  on mice models with induced diabetic wounds  suggests that Papaya the most neglected fruit among the plant kingdom can enhance the wound healing in diabetes. Although the research was carried among experimentally induced obese diabetic rats, if the results can be replicated to human models it provides hope to diabetic population who are jeopardized on health due to infective wound status.

Papaya is commonly called as Carica Papaya to scientific world has been potent healing fruit for a multitude of diseases. The role of Papaya to increase platelet counts ,prevent constipation,fight against dengue has been well documented. Wound healing properties of papaya are not well known. Papaya forms an important constituent among the very few fruits that a diabetic patient can consume. Based on these facts the researchers tried to find out whether papaya on external application can enhance wound healing in diabetic patients.

Researchers took an extract of fermented papaya and applied that over the experimentally induced wound of obese diabetic rats. They observed that fermented papaya has an important chemical substance called papain which has excellent wound healing properties. The scientific mechanism behind the study was also put into the analysis.

Possible Scientific Mechanism Of  Wound Healing By Papaya In Diabetic Wounds

1.Decreased Total Cholesterol And Low Density Lipoproteins-  After eight weeks of application of fermented papaya researches noticed that the levels of cholesterol and low density lipoproteins were considerably less when compared to diabetic rats that received no external wound application.

2.Increased dorsal Thickness of Skin- Papaya fermented application helps to increase the dorsal thickness of the healing skin and to accelerate the newly formed  skin growth by increasing blood supply to them.

3.Improved Nitric Oxide Production- Diabetes is a disease that is mainly characterized by the  decreased nitric oxide production. Bing Lu a researcher from Harvard Medical School and his associates wanted to establish whether soft drink consumption affected the progression or development of healthy adults. The data were taken from the Osteoarthritis initiative of National Institute Of Health. They screened 2149 healthy individuals show showed x-ray findings of degeneration in the knee joint, having a consistent history of soft drink consumption. The individuals were screened for progression of degenerative changes in the x-ray  for 4 years . They have found out that soft drink consumption is associated with increased degenerative changes in the knee joint for men but not I women where the hormone estrogen has a protective influence on bone health. In non obese men also a stronger relationship was observed between soft drink consumption and osteoarthritis of the knee.

Web MD points out  that at least one in 100 patients have a history of Osteoarthritis radiographically. William .A  Mcgarey,M.D suggests that arthritic individuals should avoid carbonated soft drinks at any cause. But the question is can you still resist that bubbly sound when your friend pops one in front of you, occasionally one in a week may be considered safe, although we don’t have any research to cement this view , the adverse effect were noted among people who consume at least two aerated drinks per day. When a person sits on the saddle the vibrations are directly felt in the human pelvis when the horse walks, in a normal human being when he walks the pressure is transmitted from his lower extremities to the pelvis. As the person keeps his left leg forward the left side pelvis rotates toward the front direction or anteriorly and right side pelvis rotates in the direction backwards or posteriorly. Barbara Hein P.T is of the opinion that Hippotherapy should be carried out by a qualified physiotherapist or occupational therapist who has proper knowledge regrading the body systems and client’s problem. She says that Hippotherapy that is followed today takesthe root of  the Calssic German model which relies on the horses classic movement patterns for the client’s response. Hippotherapy commonly works out on the patients vestibular system present in the ear, touch sensation,muscle motor response and higher cognitive function.The  American Hippotherapy association suggests that horse riding simulates neuro physiological systems of the human body that helps in functional activities of daily life.

Hyunk Sunwoo and Co researchers checked whether a  horse therapy is of any use for the head injury patients. The research findings were  noted down  for eight Head injury patients. The sessions were continued twice a week for eight consecutive weeks. A single session timed around 30 minutes. The riders were guided  into different patterns like crawling kneeling and standing positions.Researchers noticed a significant improvement in balance and gait speed in  patients who underwent  Hippotherapy. Hippotherapy was found to be beneficial in improving balance ability and gait speed in patients with chronic brain disorders.

Although Hippotherapy has got beneficial effect it should be noted that it works best when combined with the traditional treatment strategies or rehabilitation techniques rather than given individually as sole treatment technique. The Research team  suggests that further studies are needed to cement the findings. As of now scientific research findings suggest that Hippotherapy is an effective combination with traditional rehabilitation program to speed up recovery in brain injury patients.
